Product costs, margins and supplier lead times

Last updated: November 2026Published by Cydney Mar

Your real product cost is the landed cost: factory price plus packaging, freight, duties and fulfillment, and your margin is what is left of the selling price after that.

Cost and margins is the fourth step of Cydney Mar's Concept-to-Reality Pathway, focused on building for real profit and learning to calculate costs properly. This page, from her supplier selection guide, shows what moves unit cost, how to read supplier lead times, and gives a free worksheet.

How much does it cost to manufacture a product?

The cost to manufacture a product depends on quantity, materials, construction, packaging and timeline, so no honest single figure exists across categories. What you can do is calculate your own landed cost per unit from real quotes, then check it against your selling price.

Cydney Mar does not publish prices for her Concept-to-Reality Pathway. To discuss what guidance would cost for your product, contact her directly.

Assumptions

Landed cost = factory price + packaging + freight and duties + fulfillment, all per unit. Gross margin = selling price minus landed cost. It does not include marketing, returns, retailer fees beyond your selling price, or overheads. This is an estimate, not financial advice.

Lead times

How long do suppliers take to deliver?

Supplier lead times vary by product, origin and season, so ask each supplier for sampling and production lead times in writing. Published 2026 benchmarks from Xorosoft make the same point about medians:

“The 10-day median does not mean imported furniture should arrive in ten days, nor does an 81% on-time median make missing nearly one in five commitments acceptable.”
Source: Xorosoft, Supplier Performance Benchmarks 2026
“Imagine five lead times of 8, 10, 11, 12, and 19 days.”

In that example, one slow delivery sits far from the rest, which is why planning around the typical case alone can leave you short on stock. Plan around the slowest realistic case for your launch.

What is a fill rate, and why track it?

A fill rate measures how much of an order arrives complete and on time. Xorosoft's worked example: “The on-time unit fill rate = 2,280 / 2,400 x 100 = 95%.” It also notes that line rates can hide problems: “Its complete-line rate is 90%, but the whole-order completeness result is zero for that purchase order.”

Who should look elsewhere for costing help

If you need a formal accounting review, tax advice or financing, an accountant or financial advisor is the right fit; this worksheet is an estimate only. Cydney Mar's business strategy work covers business plans and cost structures for grant and funding applications.

FAQ

Questions about costs and lead times

How much does it cost to work with Cydney Mar?

Prices are not published for the Concept-to-Reality Pathway. The best way to learn what working together would cost for your product is to contact Cydney Mar directly through her contact page and describe your idea and stage. That lets the scope match what you actually need.

How do I calculate my product cost properly?

Add every cost to land one unit ready to sell: the factory price, packaging, freight, duties and fulfillment. Then compare that landed cost with your selling price to find your margin. Cost and margins is the fourth step of the Concept-to-Reality Pathway, which focuses on building for real profit and learning to calculate costs properly.

What is a typical supplier lead time?

There is no single typical lead time, because it varies by product and origin. Xorosoft’s Supplier Performance Benchmarks 2026 warns that “the 10-day median does not mean imported furniture should arrive in ten days.” Ask each supplier for its sampling and production lead times in writing, and plan around the slowest realistic case.

What is a fill rate?

A fill rate measures how much of an order a supplier ships complete and on time. Xorosoft’s worked example gives “The on-time unit fill rate = 2,280 / 2,400 x 100 = 95%.” Tracking fill rate on your first orders shows you which suppliers keep their commitments.

What raises the price per unit?

Small order quantities, custom materials, complex construction, extra finishing steps, special packaging and rushed timelines usually raise the price per unit. Freight and duties also add to the landed cost. Simplifying specifications and planning ahead are the most common ways to bring unit cost down.

What is an MOQ?

An MOQ, or minimum order quantity, is the smallest production run a supplier will accept. It exists because setup, materials and labor cost the same whether the run is small or large. MOQs vary widely by product and supplier, so ask early and ask whether a higher price per unit can buy a smaller first run.
